The E-Cigarette Secondhand Vapor Trickster

E-cigarettes and vaping devices are getting a lot of attention, particularly because of their huge popularity among the youth. Mounting research shows that these products are harmful and highly addictive. But there is another dangerous aspect of e-cigarettes that deserves attention for those around them, the ultra-fine vapor that users inhale and exhale when vaping, exposing themselves, those around them and the environment to harmful materials. harmful. 1

Despite what e-cigarette manufacturers would like us to believe about whether or not secondhand vapor is harmful, these products do NOT emit harmless water vapor. It is actually an aerosol made up of a combination of dangerous chemicals. 2 At least 10 chemicals identified in e-cigarette aerosol are on the State of California's Proposition 65 list of carcinogens and reproductive toxins. 3 According to the US Surgeon General, aerosol from cigarettes could expose others to harmful substances, including:

nicotine,

heavy metals,

volatile organic compounds, and

ultrafine particles that can be inhaled deeply into the lungs. 3

Exposure to fine and ultrafine particles could worsen respiratory diseases such as asthma 4 and are known to have an immediate negative impact on the cardiovascular system. 5 E-cigarette use has also been shown to constrict arteries, which can lead to heart attacks. 6

Additionally, research is showing that newer versions of e-cigarettes and vaping devices produce even  more  ultrafine particles than older models. 7

Parents of teens should know that the US Surgeon General has identified teen e-cigarette use as an epidemic. E-cigarette use among teens jumped 78% last year, with one in four high school students now using these products, which contain nicotine, a highly addictive chemical. 8 Even if your teen isn't vaping, he could be breathing in the aerosol exhaled by someone who is vaping, putting her health at risk. 9

Take the necessary steps to breathe clean air. Implement tobacco-free rules, including electronic cigarettes, in your home and in your vehicle.
